There is a misconception about NFL betting that the preseason is a time of inconsistency and just too tough to handicap because of the second and third line players that perform in the games. I will show and prove to you that this line of thinking is for losers and that there is a bundle of cash that can be made at the time. The factors that will make you a BIG winner far outweigh any doubts that the average sports bettor might have. A ‘New’ Head coach’s approach to the preseason, established head coaches with veteran teams look at it differently, young quarterbacks fighting for the he starting positions, injuries and concerns over community support are all factors that turn you into a winner.
Remember Steve Spurrier? When he started with the Washington Redskins a few years back he was looking to make a big impression on new owner Daniel Snyder and he came out of the box with guns blazing. He was running up the preseason scores like he had done in his glory days at Florida. In his first preseason game the Redskins won 43-7 and opponents complained that he ran up the score against practice players. Spurrier’s response was well get used to it because this is the way ‘we’ play. Of course the league made it’s adjustments to Spurrier’s style and they pounded the Redskins during his regular season tenure but during the preseason in the NFL he was a big winner for the Redskins and their backers. The point is to look for ‘new’ head coaches that are looking to establish a winning attitude and program with something to build on. They want to win early on to get the team on-board with the new system.
There are also new coaches like Nick Saban with the Dolphins that though they work hard it is difficult for veteran players to learn a new complicated system. These teams usually come on stronger as the season progresses.
Here is a situation that we find every year in the NFL. A playoff team has veteran players that know and understand their system, players know that they have a position on the team locked-up and don’t give maximum effort. These teams will most likely send their question marks into battle during the preseason to save the seasoned veterans for the regular season. The Green Bay Packers are famous for this resting Brett Farve during the preseason when he would see little or no action. These teams are a go-against until usually at least the third game of the preseason or the one game that the ‘star’ will start and play deep into the second half.
The best scenario for high scoring and winning against the point spread is when there are at least two and even better if the are three quarterbacks who are fighting for the starting and back up positions. This is a great opportunity to win even with the weakest team. During the fourth quarter when your opponent has seen what he wanted out of his front liners the competing quarterbacks are still looking to impress their head coaches. On one side of the ball you have a coach looking to establish and create a running game while on the other side of the field three quarterbacks are fighting for their respective lives!
Top rated teams with superstar players are very unlikely to expose their big star to injury during the preseason. Emmett Smith once had only three game carries during a preseason, only to carry the ball 26 times in the Cowboys season’s opener. It kept Smith fresh and ready for the games that count. Teams with big-time important running backs will protect them during the preseason. Look to play against these teams, especially on the road during the preseason.
Often a new coach will often enter a dismal situation and he must establish a positive image to the fans that have lost interest and confidence in the team. These owners are looking to get fan support and feel that they must win during the preseason to promote sales and interest and put pressure on their head coach to ‘win now.’ These clubs are usually gung-ho early during the season or until their talent level is exposed. Play with these teams early and against them as the season moves on.
