NCAA Football – TCU- It will tough for the Horned Frogs to repeat as the Nation’s #1 defense this season after surrendering 50 points and 564 yards to the Baylor Bears in their opener. Everyone was concerned as to how the Frogs would respond to the departure of their quarterback Andy Dalton to the pros, but it was the defense that couldn’t handle the Bears sensational quarterback Robert Griffin III who threw for 359 yards, ran for 38 and had 15 yards receiving. TCU will enter the Big East next season when Griffin is a senior.
New Uniforms – Already seen everyone playing for the Georgia Bulldogs is NOT named Georgia! They the team name on the ‘back’ of their uniforms. Also Bosie State had an artist design their terrible looking helmets and Georgias’hats are one of the ugliest I’ve every seen.
Extra Points – I started the season in fine form winning 4 of 5 with my only loss coming when Wisconsin gave up a 51-3 lead over UNLV and it was a missed extra-point that spelled the difference as the won by 34 laying 34 1/2. Note: I am also 4-1 in NFL Vegas Insiders releases with the only loss coming when Jack Del Rio went for two-point conversion with over six minutes remaining to win by two laying 2 ½. Losers lament.
NFL - Well, the preseason is done and we’ll get to see them tee it up for real on Thursday as the last two Super Bowl champions collide in Green Bay as the Packers are about a 5-point favorite over New Orleans. Two clubs went undefeated during these ‘meaningless’ games as Detroit and St. Louis went 4-0 both straight-up and against the points. That is usually not a good omen for teams entering Week 1 of NFL Football action. Three teams failed to win during the preseason (0-4) and two of them are from the AFC West as Oakland and Kansas City failed to win as well as Atlanta in the NFC (last years #1 seed). Don’t be surprised if four of these five clubs reverse their trends for the opener.
NFL Week 1 – NFC Top Five – Green Bay, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Detroit
NFL Week 1 – NFC Bottom Five – Carolina, Minnesota, Seattle, San Francisco and Washington
NFL Week 1 – AFC Top Five – New England, Pittsburgh, New York Jets, Baltimore and Houston
NFL Week 1 - AFC Bottom Five – Oakland, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Jacksonville and Denver
MLB – God, you’ve to love the Yankees and Red Sox battles. Here they are fighting for the only spot in baseball that is in question. All division leading and the Wild Card positions are locked up in the National League with the Phillies, Brewers, Diamondbacks (baring a total collapse) and no one close to the Braves as the Wild Card. It is much more of the same in the American League as the Rangers and Tigers are pulling away and the Yankees and Red Sox left to battle for the Division crown and wild car spot even with the best record in the AL between them. People are complaining about the length of the games in this rivalry but that doesn’t both me as both sides battle on every pitch. It’s better then watching so many of these so called ‘professionals’ just going through the the motions.
Detroit – Brandon Inge of the Tigers had been struggling and even heard some boos from the Detroit faithful before he was sent down to Triple A ball and was looking like his career was coming to a close. Loving baseball the way he does Inge approached his demotion like a true professional as he worked hard and played well in his stint in the minors. It wasn’t long before Inge was recalled and hit a home run in his first at bat upon his return and for good measure knocked a double in his next plate appearance to complete his wet eyes return. It an age when many would have refused to be send down it was Inge’s love of baseball that kept him going during this difficult period. We need more like him. Congrats Brandon!
NBA – A lock out? Right now, nobody seems to care, fans, players or owners. Remember, tahe commissioners work for the owners and NOT the players. ALL commissioners in every sport works to keep the owners from cannibalizing each other. That’s why I laughed when the NFL players were attacking Roger Goddell…he doesn’t work for you! Idiots!
